Well, that was depressing, getting beaten by the team who were the cellar-dwellers of the league last year and couldn't even field a full team most of the time. We were muscled off the ball and beaten to it, and once again we went loose and floppy in the second half out of sheer lack of fitness. We're improving... just not quickly enough.

And once again I had to mark some scarily fast bitches, this time playing 75% of the game at left half forward. I competed well for the ball, and the two or three times I actually got hold of it I made a good run and some straight kicks... didn't score any points, although only a good save kept me from a goal in the second half. My teammates were fast to tell me that I'm adapting to Life In The Outfield quickly.

Got to play outfield in 7-a-side soccer on Friday, too. I wouldn't want to play there in the "world game", though, because I like catching the ball, and because my kicks from the hand are much better than my kicks from the ground. But I do hope I can actually get good at Gaelic soon.

I should say that to myself, but just a tought: We should try to use the word "depressing" less inflationary and save it as a label for the really depressing moments of life. I guess getting beaten by the basement-dwellers is quite disappointing, but not really depressing... especially if your "Life in the Outfield" is going quite well.

( in fact I envy you - I wish I could actually run across a football playground for only once, without all the obstacles one has to get familiar with when even the most scary age 40 lies several eons behind. ;-) )

You make a good point. In fact, I wasn't depressed after the game, because of the endorphin rush from the exercise and the knowledge that I hadn't totally embarrassed myself playing away from goalkeeper land. (I have been pretty intensely depressed for most of the last week, though, for reasons unrelated to football.)

The reason I can still run across a football field in my mid-30s is that I only started doing so a few years ago, as opposed to people who'd been running around ever since they were kids, and when they hit 29 their knees start falling to pieces.
