Hmm... Coming from Computer Science and Mathematics background here... My Honours project was 80 pages... The longest PhD I've seen recently (which was also the worst :-) ) was 350 pages... One of the best PhD's in Mathematics I saw was 5 pages... :-) What are you aiming for? :-)
By the way, the number of words seems to be growing at steady pace there - so, congratulations. Words are useful, I've just generated a full Australasian Computer Science Conference (ACSC2004) paper that I will submit tomorrow in, like, a couple of days. Basically, having taken the stuff I wrote a while ago and never published about some work I did... Finger crossed it won't be rejected too badly... :-) I do have to keep the list slowly growing: http://www.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/~alex/publications.shtml ... Maybe I should avoid posting links revealing my identity here... I'll think about deleting this comment at a later stage... :)
I also think that 16,000 should be up to 60 pages of text, if you use a right LaTeX template (that uses lots of space ;-) ) - or do you not use LaTeX in your department? :-)

Oh, I'm on a roll now. I'm going overseas in mid-December, so that gives me a nice firm deadline.

*befuddled* The only place I use latex is for safer sex. Using EngLit formatting procedures, 16,000 words is apparently 33 pages at the moment.
Literally everyone in Mathematics and Computer Science uses it. Because it makes it trivial for us to typeset mathematical formulas and write papers that contain more Greek than English. :-)
I hear they tend to chuck a fit if you give 'em a doctorate which is longer than 100,000 words. I'll probably write a bit more than that in draft, but that'll leave good grist for editing.
