Emails recovered. My biographers of the future breathe a sigh of relief. Thanks to mainfisch, who stopped me wasting another day or two doing things the hard way.
Yay :) I keep almost all my emails as well, and it would be a pity to lose that record.
Having said that, I still have a huge data file of emails that I exported from my first laptop and then couldn't open again. But I haven't fully devoted myself to the problem - hopefully it could be resolved with a bit of effort.
