*hugs* I rather suspect that you're one of the better tutors the department has - astonishingly well-read, experienced, and good at explaining things. Not to mention enthusiastic, passionate, and funny...
You are only responsible to a limited extent for their marks. End of year = lots of essays due at once, and many first year students probably just couldn't give the required attention to your essay.
When I tutored, I came to conclude that I could only hold their hand so far; but, admittedly, I still felt sad when students did badly (and angry when they plagiarised!).
