Anton LaVey said that the main enemy of longevity was popularity, but I'd actually say it's prolificity. Look at the evidence:

Frank Zappa: more than 60 albums, dead of prostate cancer at 53
Vladimir Lenin: leader of first successful worker's revolution, dead of four strokes at 54
Robert Calvert: more than 20 albums, books of poetry, etc, dead of heart attack at 43
W. A. Mozart: more music than the mind can comfortably encompass, dead at 37
Terry Pratchett: more than 30 novels, brain chemistry officially giving out

In contrast:

Leonard Cohen: started musical career in mid-30's, only 12 albums, still going strong at 74
Kate Bush: releases albums at rate of continental drift, still happy and healthy at 49
Vostok Lake: has been working on most recent album for 5 years and counting, will possibly never die
