To my distress, a workmate sent around a badly Kiwi-ized version of this gruesome piece of bigotry as a chain letter today. While as a leftie I do not see the need to get a fellow worker fired over this, I did feel the need for a rebuttal - like so:

Hi all:

A couple of points:

The following was NOT published in a New Zealand newspaper. It is poorly adapted from an article written by an American conservative called Barry Lowdermilk in 2001 – see http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/beamerican.html. You can see that whoever tried to make it sound like a New Zealander had written it didn’t try too hard – you will see that it talks about “our pledge”. We don’t have a pledge, although of course the Americans do. And “In God We Trust” is certainly not our national motto!

Secondly, I find this letter offensive in general. Apart from the fact that I am not Christian myself, I have several Muslim friends and acquaintances and I take offence at anyone suggesting that they should have to “leave the country”. With the exception of Maori, we all come from immigrant backgrounds in this country and making reasonable accommodations for each other’s cultures is part of what makes this country great. There is a great campaign to demonise Muslim people on a worldwide basis, and while I don’t know whether [$COMPANY] has any Muslim employees, I don’t think we should tolerate this at work.

Feel free to use this yourself, with appropriate amendments, if you see this nasty piece of copypasta.
