What I use my education for
Jul. 2nd, 2003 12:35 pmShelf-tidying is perhaps the most obnoxious thing we library mooks have to do. It consists in going through a bunch of shelves and putting all the books in the right order. This isn't so bad when it's actual *books*, where the call number is clearly written on the spine and you can just read along. It's excruciating when it's tiny little pamphlets or journals, where you actually have to pull them out one by one to see what they are; and when there can be something like a hundred on any one shelf. *shudder*
Anyway, many of our periodicals aren't in English - eg. Japanese economics journals. And I was very gratified today to find that I can still remember what the Japanese numbers look like, because that's all I could understand on one particular series of journals. So I was able to at least put them in numerical order. See, my linguistic obsessions stand me in good stead.
Memo to self: finish the fuckin' thesis or you'll have to work in a goddessforsaken library for the rest of your life!!!
